Writer's Note

Writing came to me when I began to examine the world around me. I used to beg my Mother for diaries and journals. Would get ahold of her spirals and flipped to the back for empty pages. Capturing the lives of those around me in scribbling, crooked sketches and whatever colors my crayons could make.

Later, after the loss of my Mother, writing became an abstract space for therapy. Writing grew beyond lined notebook paper. I sought after authors, speakers, artists and musicians that could speak to the lived experiences of Black American children. Writing introduced a vast world to me that was larger than my own. Across state-lines and oceans. Allowing me to be a welcomed guest sitting in on one's interpretations and colorful depictions of cultural identities and human interaction. As I continued to grow and navigate the world, I grew more in love with the art of storytelling. I longed to join the voices and art of those who are fearless in documenting, showcasing and celebrating our lived and imagined experiences. Be it essays, dissertations, novels, biographies, memoirs, poems, screenplays . . .

I have much more work to do! Join me.

Tulsa's Legacy

Debut Novel

Shaina Thomas released Tulsa's Legacy as her debut novel in April of 2018. Tulsa's Legacy was her "baby" for five-plus years as she conducted extensive research. As a Tulsa, Oklahoma-native, the legacy of the United States' Black Wall Street was and remains tremendously important to Shaina; hence, her continued professional and voluntary support of projects and initiatives committed to preserving such a rich history and present-day emblem of Black excellence.

There is a lot to witness for a curious child wandering a residential and business district of one of the Nation's Black meccas. Tulsa's Legacy captures the pulse of Black Wall Street, a city-within-a-city booming business district and growing residential community, before and during the Tulsa Race Riots/Massacre of 1921. This story is relived through an untold perspective of a nosy adolescent eavesdropping and spying on the daily lives of adults as tensions rise during the Jim Crow era in the United States.

O P T to D A N C E

Coming Soon

"A tribute to those I have noticed laughing and having more fun. Those who are not afraid to call themselves out on their own bull shit, reflect and simply laugh. Or, dance."

I’ve been working on this latest release for quite some time now, and can’t wait to share it with you. Opt to Dance first started out as a memoir wrapped in various untold narratives under the titles Unravel'd and Paula's Oldest Son aiming to capture the complex lived experiences of Black American children navigating the world without parents, but soon turned into a fascinating undertaking which I couldn’t stop thinking about or writing. Finally, it has taken the form of a collection of poetry and vignettes that celebrates the intersections and expressions of being human and a Black woman in today's ever-changing world.
